Temp-Stable Powder Claims: My Logbook Says Only Two Survive

Zero from January - dead in July. Same box, same rifle - 90 fps of drift nobody touched.

Fourteen degrees at zero dark thirty, and my 300 Win Mag was printing three inches high at 200 yards. Same rifle, same scope, same box of ammo I’d zeroed with in July at 91 degrees. Point of impact had walked almost five inches between two range sessions seven months apart, and I hadn’t touched a single knob. That’s the morning I stopped trusting powder to behave itself just because the label said magnum or premium or extreme.

I’d loaded that batch in June, shot a clean zero, packed the rest of the box away, and assumed physics would leave it alone. Physics did not leave it alone. The powder did what powder does when the mercury drops sixty degrees: it burned slower, pressure curve shifted, velocity dropped enough to matter at any range past 150 yards. Nothing broke. Nothing leaked. The ammo just quietly stopped being the ammo I sighted in with.

That morning cost me a shot at a bull I’d glassed for two hours, and it cost me the last of my patience with the phrase “load it once and forget it.” I went home, pulled every logbook page for that rifle going back three seasons, and started looking for a pattern instead of an excuse.

What the Label Promised Versus What My Logbook Recorded

The old-timers I learned from had one line for this: powder is powder, load it in spring, shoot it in December, don’t overthink it. That works fine if you never chronograph anything and never shoot past 100 yards. The moment you stretch the range or start chasing quarter-minute groups, the temperature swings show up as real inches on paper, not theory in a magazine article.

Then the powder makers noticed hunters were annoyed about this, and every new can on the shelf started wearing some version of the word temp-stable. Marketing solved the problem on the label years before it solved it in my chamber. I bought into it early, ran three different “stable” offerings through the same 300 Win Mag load over two summers and two winters, and wrote down every number instead of every promise.

Here’s what the logbook actually says instead of what the can says. Ordinary powders, the ones with no stability claim at all, drift 50 to 100 fps between a 20-degree winter morning and a 90-degree summer afternoon. That is enough to open groups noticeably and to shift your dope a full click or more at any real hunting distance. The newer temp-stable powders are better, no argument, but better is not the same as solved: my chronograph has them drifting 20 to 40 fps across that same seasonal swing, which is smaller but still very much there on a cold morning when you only get one shot.

Season After Season, the Same Two Powders Keep Holding

My method for testing this is not complicated and it does not need to be. I load one batch, chronograph it across an actual season, not a single afternoon, meaning different days, different weather fronts, sometimes a cold snap in the middle of what should be summer. Every string goes in the book with date, temperature, and elevation, no exceptions, because a single good day tells you nothing and a full season tells you almost everything.

Across that kind of testing, year after year, two powders keep showing up in the same place on the page no matter what the sky is doing: H4350 and H1000. I’ve got strings from January mornings in the teens and August afternoons pushing past 95, same charge, same components, same rifle, and the velocity spread between those extremes sits inside single digits to maybe 15 fps, which is inside the noise of my chronograph and my barrel, not a real seasonal trend at all.

Everything else I’ve tried, including the newest “extreme” and “stable” labeled powders from the last several loading cycles, circles that same tight spot on the target but never quite lands on it. They’re good powders. I’m not telling you to throw them out of the cabinet. I’m telling you my data says they still move 20 to 40 fps with the seasons, and H4350 and H1000, in my rifles, across my logbook, do not move enough to notice without a chronograph proving it to me on paper.

Why the Newer Powders Still Drift

The chemistry behind temp-stable claims usually involves a coating or deterrent layer that slows the burn rate’s sensitivity to ambient heat, sort of like adding a thermostat to an engine that used to run hotter in summer. That thermostat helps. It does not eliminate the fact that nitrocellulose still burns faster when it’s warmer, coating or no coating. H4350 and H1000 were not built with a marketing claim in mind, they just happen to sit in a burn-rate range and grain structure that shrugs off the swing better than most, and that’s the kind of thing you only find by chronographing across real seasons, not by reading a can.

Practice Powder, Hunting Powder: Why I Never Mix the Two

Once I had that pattern nailed down in the logbook, I split my loading bench into two jobs instead of one. Practice ammo, the stuff I burn through at the range every week just to keep my trigger control honest, gets loaded with whatever cheap, plentiful powder I can find on sale. I re-tune that load every spring and every fall, because I expect it to drift and I’ve already budgeted the range time to chase it back onto zero.

The hunting load is a different animal entirely, and it lives on H4350 or H1000 depending on the cartridge, and once it’s tuned in the spring, I do not touch it again until next spring. No swapping lots to save a few dollars, no experimenting with a new can because a forum thread got me curious, no changing anything at all between the zero I confirm before season and the shot I take in November. That rifle and that load get to trust each other, because my logbook has already proven the powder won’t move on me between the range and the mountain.

This is also where checking a hunting load’s cold-bore behavior matters as much as the powder choice, since the first shot out of a cold, clean barrel after months of sitting is its own separate question worth verifying on this site, but the powder stability is what keeps that first shot honest once you’ve already confirmed it.

I learned the two-tier system the expensive way, by ruining a perfectly good hunting zero trying to save money on a “close enough” substitute the week before season. Never again. Practice powder is for burning ammo and staying sharp. Hunting powder is for staying zeroed, and those are not the same job, any more than a beater truck and a tow rig are the same vehicle just because they both have four wheels.

So here’s the categorical verdict, because you didn’t come here for “it depends.” If your rifle has to work in January and August off the same box of ammo, load it with H4350 or H1000 where your cartridge and bullet weight allow, following the specific charge data from your manual or the powder maker, and stop gambling on a label that promises stability without the seasonal logbook to back it up. Everything else on the shelf, including the newest and most heavily marketed temp-stable options, is still drifting 20 to 40 fps in my testing, which might be fine for practice ammo you’re re-tuning twice a year anyway, but it is not fine for the one shot you get on an animal after a 300-yard stalk in weather nothing like your zero day.

I’m still chronographing new lots every season, because powder manufacturing changes lot to lot even within a brand I trust, and the day I stop verifying is the day I earn another five-inch surprise at sunrise.
