The Grendel’s answer was to base the case on the 6.5mm PPC competition cartridge – a short-fat design with proven accuracy – and neck it to accept standard 6.5mm bullets. The result fits a standard AR-15 with only a bolt and barrel change, pushes 123-grain bullets to approximately 2,580 FPS, and retains supersonic flight well past 800 yards with heavy high-BC bullets.
Against the 5.56x45mm, the Grendel’s advantage is real and measurable: better BC bullets, 30-40% more energy at the muzzle, and substantially less wind drift past 400 yards. Against bolt-action 6.5mm cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor, it is slower by 100-300 FPS with the same bullets – a meaningful limitation at 800+ yards but largely irrelevant for hunting inside 500 yards.

With a 100-yard zero, the 6.5 Grendel is 3.5-4.3 inches low at 200 yards. That is manageable for most shooting – experienced hunters hold slightly high at 200 yards instinctively. At 300 yards the drop reaches 13-16 inches depending on load, which requires deliberate holdover or a dialed correction. This is where the Grendel’s moderate velocity begins to show relative to faster cartridges.
The 130-grain Berger drops about 19 more inches than the 100-grain V-MAX at 500 yards. That gap reflects the lower starting velocity of the heavier bullet dominating over its BC advantage at these distances. The heavier bullet catches up in wind resistance but not in drop inside 700 yards. Hunters who primarily shoot inside 300 yards will notice very little practical difference between loads; at 400+ yards load selection and holdover precision both matter.

Wind drift is where the 6.5 Grendel’s high-BC bullet selection pays off most clearly within the AR-15 platform context. At 500 yards in a 10 MPH crosswind, the 130-grain Hybrid drifts 14.8 inches versus 19.0 inches for the 100-grain V-MAX – a 4-inch difference that keeps the heavier bullet inside a deer’s vital zone where the lighter bullet begins to challenge it.
Compared to the 5.56x45mm 77-grain TMK (G7 BC approximately 0.227) at similar velocities, the 6.5 Grendel 123-grain Scenar drifts about 7 fewer inches at 500 yards in the same 10 MPH wind. That difference – roughly the width of a deer’s vital zone – is the practical argument for the Grendel upgrade over 5.56x45mm for deer hunting in variable-wind conditions.
Beyond 600 yards, wind drift exceeds 22-28 inches for all loads. At that point accurate wind reading and compensation becomes the dominant factor in hitting the target, more so than which specific Grendel load is loaded.

The velocity retention table reveals clear practical limits. The 100-grain V-MAX goes subsonic between 700 and 750 yards – it is a 700-yard maximum load for consistent accuracy. The 123-grain Scenar crosses transonic around 825-850 yards.
The 120-grain ELD-M and 130-grain Hybrid both stay above 1,340 FPS past 900 yards – the Hybrid just barely. For shooters who want to stretch the 6.5 Grendel past 800 yards, the 120-grain ELD-M is the more reliable choice based on supersonic retention. The 130-grain Hybrid’s higher BC helps at those distances but its lower starting velocity limits the supersonic ceiling.
Importantly: the 6.5 Grendel in a 16-inch AR-15 barrel loses approximately 60-80 FPS compared to the 24-inch barrel data most published tables use. From a 16-inch barrel, the 120-grain ELD-M starts closer to 2,520 FPS and the supersonic threshold shifts 50-75 yards closer accordingly.

The energy numbers define the 6.5 Grendel’s hunting limits honestly. For deer (1,000 ft-lbs practical minimum with expanding bullets), the 120-grain ELD-M holds above that threshold to about 300 yards; the 130-grain Hybrid to approximately 310 yards. All loads drop below the deer threshold between 300 and 400 yards.
This is the 6.5 Grendel’s most significant hunting limitation compared to bolt-action 6.5mm cartridges. The 6.5 Creedmoor 143-grain ELD-X holds above 1,000 ft-lbs past 700 yards. The Grendel is genuinely limited to 300-350 yards for ethical deer hunting when energy is the primary concern. Shot placement with controlled-expansion bullets can extend this somewhat, but the energy threshold at 400 yards (approximately 950-965 ft-lbs) does not provide margin for marginal shots.
For elk (1,500 ft-lbs threshold), the Grendel is below that mark at the muzzle with the lighter loads and crosses below it with the heavier loads around 150-175 yards. The 6.5 Grendel is not an elk cartridge at any reasonable distance.
Terminal Performance Profiles
Hornady V-MAX 100 gr
Construction: Polymer tip with thin boat-tail jacket designed for explosive fragmentation. No attempt at controlled expansion – maximum fragmentation for varmint applications.
Terminal behavior: The V-MAX fragments violently on contact at typical Grendel velocities of 2,700 FPS. Penetration is limited to 8-12 inches but the large temporary cavity from fragmentation produces rapid incapacitation on varmints and small predators. At 400 yards where impact velocity drops to approximately 1,836 FPS, fragmentation becomes less reliable but still effective on coyote-sized game.
Hunting application: The appropriate Grendel load for coyotes, prairie dogs, and similar varmints to 500 yards. Not appropriate for deer – inadequate penetration depth for reliable vitals access from any angle other than a direct broadside lung shot. The V-MAX’s 1,620 ft-lbs muzzle energy drops below 750 ft-lbs at 400 yards, insufficient for ethical deer kills. Use this bullet for what it was designed for.

Hornady ELD-M 120 gr
Construction: Match-grade polymer tip with Heat Shield, boat-tail. Designed for precision at long range, not for controlled hunting expansion.
Terminal behavior: At Grendel velocities above 2,200 FPS (inside about 275 yards), the ELD-M expands erratically – sometimes producing dramatic tissue disruption, sometimes passing through with limited effect depending on tissue density and angle. Below 2,000 FPS its expansion is even less predictable. This inconsistency is inherent to match bullets used at hunting impact velocities.
Competition application: The best choice for 6.5 Grendel long-range competition use – its G7 BC of 0.271 produces the best combination of supersonic retention and wind resistance among the common Grendel load weights. In quality AR-15 barrels, sub-1 MOA groups at 600 yards are achievable. The ELD-M stays supersonic past 900 yards, making it the practical ceiling load for Grendel competition.
Field note: Some AR-15 hunters use the ELD-M on deer at close range (inside 200 yards) where impact velocity is above 2,300 FPS and tissue disruption from the thin jacket is reliable. This is not a recommended practice – use the ELD-X or a purpose-designed hunting bullet for deer.

Nosler Ballistic Tip 120 gr
Construction: Polymer tip initiates rapid expansion, tapered copper jacket, solid boat-tail base.
Terminal behavior: The Ballistic Tip expands rapidly at Grendel velocities – mushroom diameter of 0.55-0.65 inches in the first 6-8 inches of tissue. At close-range high-velocity impacts, the front jacket portions shed and total penetration is 12-16 inches in deer-sized tissue. At reduced velocities past 300 yards (below 2,000 FPS), expansion becomes more controlled and penetration slightly deeper.
Hunting application: A capable deer bullet inside 300 yards where the Grendel’s energy supports ethical kills. The Ballistic Tip’s rapid expansion produces effective tissue disruption on broadside deer shots. For hogs and any quartering shot that requires penetration through heavy muscle before the vitals, the rapid expansion can limit penetration depth. Terminal behavior: Expands to a four-petal mushroom of 0.48-0.54 inches. Full bullet weight continues forward, producing penetration of 18-24 inches in deer-sized tissue. Federal Fusion 120 gr
Construction: Electrochemically bonded copper jacket fused to lead core. The bonding prevents core-jacket separation under any impact condition.
Terminal behavior: Expands to 0.52-0.60 inches with 85-95% weight retention. Penetration in deer-sized tissue: 16-20 inches. The bonded construction is more reliable than cup-and-core designs at the Grendel’s impact velocity range – it maintains adequate expansion and penetration from close-range 2,600 FPS impacts through 300-yard 2,000 FPS impacts.
Hunting application: The best practical hunting bullet for the 6.5 Grendel on deer. The bonded construction handles the Grendel’s moderate impact velocities reliably from close range through the cartridge’s practical hunting ceiling, and it is widely available at sporting goods stores. Inside 300 yards with broadside or quartering-away shots, the Federal Fusion in the 6.5 Grendel produces clean kills on deer. Practical Range Recommendations
Varmints and predators – the 100-grain V-MAX to 500 yards on coyotes and similar animals. The explosive fragmentation at Grendel velocities produces reliable, rapid kills and the low energy threshold of varmint-sized game means the 748 ft-lbs at 400 yards is perfectly adequate.
Deer – 300 yards maximum with the Federal Fusion, Barnes TTSX, or Nosler Ballistic Tip. The energy at 300 yards (approximately 922-1,130 ft-lbs depending on load) is at the lower limit for ethical deer kills. Inside 250 yards, any of the controlled-expansion loads above produces reliable results. Beyond 300 yards, the Grendel is asking a hunter to rely on precision shot placement to compensate for borderline energy – a self-imposed 300-yard limit is the responsible standard.
Hogs – 200-250 yards maximum with the Federal Fusion or Barnes TTSX. Hogs require deeper penetration than deer due to their thick hide and shoulder shield, which means cup-and-core and rapidly expanding bullets are less appropriate. The Fusion and TTSX at Grendel velocities provide adequate penetration inside 250 yards; beyond that both energy and penetration depth become limiting factors.
AR-15 platform note – factory 6.5 Grendel ammunition is typically loaded to 24-inch barrel data. From a 16-inch carbine (the most common Grendel platform), subtract approximately 75-100 FPS from all muzzle velocities in this article and adjust ranges accordingly. The 300-yard deer hunting ceiling shifts to approximately 250-275 yards from a 16-inch barrel.

What is the difference between Type I and Type II 6.5 Grendel? Type I and Type II refer to bolt face specifications. Type I (original Alexander Arms spec) uses a 0.136-inch firing pin hole.
