The 257 Roberts has a history that begins before most modern cartridges were conceived. Ned Roberts developed the original wildcat in the 1920s by necking the 7x57mm Mauser case to .257 inches, and Remington standardized it commercially in 1934. The original standard-pressure loadings were conservative – Remington initially loaded it with round-nose bullets at modest velocities that undersold the case’s potential. The +P designation eventually unlocked the cartridge’s full capability, pushing 100-grain spitzer bullets to 2,900-3,000 FPS with spitzer designs and giving the 257 Roberts ballistics comparable to the early 25-06 wildcat.

The 257 Roberts occupies a genuine niche: more capacity and velocity than the 250 Savage, less recoil and cost than the 25-06 Remington, and a pleasant shooting character that has attracted devoted handloaders for nearly a century. Its primary audience in 2026 is hunters who own classic pre-war or post-war bolt-actions – Ruger 77s, Winchester Model 70s, Remington 722s – and appreciate the cartridge’s heritage and efficiency.

Achieve perfect case neck alignment easily
The Lee Collet Neck Sizing Die Set ensures precise case neck alignment while minimizing runout. Perfect for reloaders seeking accuracy with each shot, this set includes everything you need for efficient reloading.

Chamber note: The 257 Roberts comes in standard and +P versions. Standard chambers are loaded to approximately 49,000 CUP; +P chambers handle higher pressure loads producing meaningfully more velocity. Verify your rifle’s chamber specification before loading +P data. Most modern production rifles are marked “+P” if they accept the higher-pressure loads.

For reloading data, see the 257 Roberts complete guide. For comparisons, see 25-06 Remington vs 257 Roberts.

Drop in inches. Zero at 100 yards.

With a 100-yard zero, the 257 Roberts 100-grain Partition is 3.7 inches low at 200 yards and 13.9 inches low at 300 yards – typical for a standard-velocity .25-caliber hunting cartridge. The drop is more pronounced than the faster 25-06 Remington (12.9 inches at 300 yards with a comparable 115-grain load), reflecting the 200 FPS velocity deficit.

The 75-grain V-MAX’s dramatically flatter trajectory – 10.3 inches at 300 yards versus 13.9 for the Partition – reflects the 500 FPS velocity advantage of the lighter varmint load. Hunters switching between varmint and deer loads must track each load’s holdover separately.

At 400 yards the heavy 117-grain GameKing drops 36.5 inches with a 100-yard zero – over three feet. This is beyond practical field shooting for most hunters without a ballistic turret and confirmed distance.

Drift in inches. Half-value crosswind = divide by 2.

The 117-grain GameKing drifts 26 fewer inches than the 75-grain V-MAX at 1,000 yards. At practical hunting distances the gap is smaller but still meaningful: at 400 yards the heavier load drifts 3.5 fewer inches in a 10 MPH crosswind. For deer hunting in variable wind conditions, the 100-117 grain class provides noticeably better wind resistance than the lighter varmint loads.

At 300 yards in a 10 MPH crosswind, all loads drift 4.6-6.5 inches. The 257 Roberts is not a wind-bucking cartridge at extended range – it is appropriate for calm or light-wind conditions past 300 yards on deer. In reliable crosswinds exceeding 10 MPH, keeping shots inside 250 yards is prudent.

Unmatched accuracy for competitive shooters
These 138-grain .257 bullets are engineered for superior long-range precision and consistent performance in both competition and hunting. Advanced design features enhance accuracy and improve aerodynamics for your shooting needs.

The 75-grain V-MAX goes subsonic around 875 yards. All three hunting loads (90-117 grain) stay above the transonic threshold past 950-975 yards, though only barely. The 257 Roberts is not a 1,000-yard precision cartridge – all loads are near or below the transonic threshold at that distance and wind drift exceeds 61-87 inches in a 10 MPH wind.

The practical precision ceiling for the 257 Roberts is 600-700 yards at best in calm conditions. For hunting, the relevant velocity figure is whether bullets still expand reliably at practical hunting distances: all four loads arrive above 1,900 FPS at 400 yards, well above the minimum expansion threshold for any quality hunting bullet.

Energy in ft-lbs.

The energy picture is the 257 Roberts’s honest limiting factor. For deer (1,000 ft-lbs practical minimum), the 90-grain GameKing and 117-grain GameKing hold above that threshold to approximately 310-325 yards. The 100-grain Partition crosses below 1,000 ft-lbs at about 315 yards. The 75-grain V-MAX drops below 1,000 ft-lbs around 295 yards.

The original article claimed “ethical hunting ranges up to 500-700 yards for big game” – this is significantly overstated. At 500 yards all loads deliver only 651-812 ft-lbs, well below the 1,000 ft-lbs minimum for ethical deer kills. The 257 Roberts is a 300-yard deer cartridge, not a 500-700 yard big game cartridge.

The 117-grain load produces the highest muzzle energy (2,009 ft-lbs) and holds energy best at distance due to its higher sectional density – it is the appropriate choice when maximum energy retention matters, such as shots on larger deer at the cartridge’s range limits.

Terminal Performance Profiles

Hornady V-MAX 75 gr

Construction: Polymer tip with thin expanding jacket, lead core. Maximum fragmentation for varmint applications.

Terminal behavior: Fragments violently at 257 Roberts velocities. At 3,400 FPS, the 75-grain V-MAX produces explosive fragmentation with penetration of 8-11 inches – devastating on coyotes and smaller varmints but insufficient for reliable deer kills from any angle other than a direct broadside lung shot. At 400 yards where velocity drops to approximately 2,230 FPS, fragmentation is still effective on coyotes.

Hunting application: Coyotes and medium predators to 450 yards, varmints to 500 yards. The 75-grain V-MAX’s 3,400 FPS starting velocity produces a noticeably flat trajectory compared to the heavier hunting loads – 10.3 inches at 300 yards versus 15.8 inches for the 117-grain GameKing. Not a deer bullet.

Sierra GameKing 90 gr

Construction: Soft point boat-tail with tapered jacket. Available in spitzer flat-base and boat-tail configurations; the boat-tail version has better BC for range work.

Terminal behavior: Expands to 0.44-0.52 inches at 257 Roberts velocities. Penetration in deer-sized tissue: 14-18 inches on broadside shots. At close range with the 257 Roberts’s moderate 3,050 FPS, expansion is controlled and reliable without the fragmentation risk that plagues faster cartridges. Weight retention approximately 65-75%.

Hunting application: A capable deer bullet inside 300 yards for handloaders who want good accuracy and adequate penetration. The 90-grain weight produces less recoil and a slightly flatter trajectory than the heavier 100-117 grain loads, making it popular with youth hunters or anyone who values the mildest possible 257 Roberts recoil. Not appropriate for elk or shots at non-ideal angles through heavy muscle.

Nosler Partition 100 gr

Construction: Dual-core partitioned design. Front core expands rapidly; the partition retains the rear core for guaranteed minimum penetration regardless of impact angle. Highest sectional density of the three hunting loads at this weight (SD 0.216).

Terminal behavior: Front core mushrooms to 0.46-0.54 inches in the first 5-7 inches. The partition retains the rear core for an additional 12-15 inches of penetration. Total penetration in deer-sized tissue: 17-22 inches. Weight retention 65-72%. The Partition exits on most broadside deer shots and provides reliable penetration from quartering angles where a cup-and-core bullet might fail.

Hunting application: The best all-around 257 Roberts hunting bullet for deer and large antelope. The Partition’s velocity-insensitive design handles both close-range impacts at full velocity and extended-range impacts where the 257 Roberts has slowed. For hunters who may face quartering shots on mule deer through heavy shoulder or who hunt in close timber where range is uncertain, the Partition provides the penetration margin that other designs cannot guarantee. Practical range: 300 yards.

Sierra GameKing 117 gr

Construction: Soft point boat-tail. The heaviest standard 257 Roberts hunting bullet with the highest sectional density (SD 0.253) and best energy retention of the common load weights.

Terminal behavior: Expands to 0.44-0.52 inches with 70-80% weight retention. Penetration in deer-sized tissue: 16-20 inches. The heavier mass and higher sectional density provide the best penetration depth of the four loads on quartering shots, making the 117-grain GameKing the most appropriate choice for large deer or any shot where the bullet may need to travel through heavy muscle before reaching the vitals.

Hunting application: The premium 257 Roberts hunting load for maximum energy retention and penetration. The 117-grain GameKing holds above 1,000 ft-lbs to approximately 325 yards – 10-15 yards farther than the 100-grain loads. For hunters who push the 257 Roberts to its range limits on deer, the heavier bullet provides modestly better energy margin. The tradeoff is more drop at distance – at 400 yards the 117-grain is 4.5 inches lower than the 75-grain varmint load. Practical range: 300-325 yards.

Nosler Ballistic Tip 100 gr

Construction: Polymer tip initiates rapid expansion, tapered copper jacket, boat-tail base. Standard weight factory ammunition choice.

Terminal behavior: Expands rapidly to 0.48-0.58 inches. At the 257 Roberts’s moderate muzzle velocity of 2,900 FPS, the Ballistic Tip performs more like a controlled cup-and-core bullet than it would at higher Weatherby velocities – expansion is reliable without the premature fragmentation risk that appears at 3,400+ FPS. Penetration 14-18 inches on broadside deer shots.

Hunting application: The most common factory 257 Roberts deer load. Federal and Remington have offered 100-grain Ballistic Tip style factory loads that represent the standard commercial option for hunters who do not handload. Reliable on deer inside 300 yards with broadside or quartering-away shots. The Partition is the better choice for quartering shots through heavy muscle, but the Ballistic Tip handles standard broadside deer shots reliably at the 257 Roberts’s moderate velocities.

Practical Range Recommendations

Varmints and coyotes – 75-grain V-MAX to 450 yards. The 3,400 FPS muzzle velocity produces good flat trajectory for open-country coyote work. At 400 yards impact velocity is still 2,230 FPS with adequate fragmentation for reliable coyote kills.

Deer – 100-grain Partition or 117-grain GameKing to 300 yards maximum with a 100-yard zero. Energy at 300 yards (approximately 1,118-1,200 ft-lbs) is adequate for deer on clean broadside shots. At 400 yards energy drops to 922-990 ft-lbs – below the reliable threshold for ethical deer kills. A self-imposed 275-yard limit in field conditions with estimated range and variable wind is the realistic standard. The 257 Roberts is not a long-range deer cartridge; it is a pleasant-shooting 200-300 yard deer cartridge with heritage value.

+P loads – handloaders using +P data in verified +P chambers add approximately 100-150 FPS to the standard-pressure figures above, pushing the 100-grain Partition to 3,000-3,050 FPS. At +P velocities the energy holds above 1,000 ft-lbs to approximately 350-360 yards and the trajectory flattens slightly. For hunters with +P chambers who handload, the 257 Roberts +P approaches 25-06 Remington territory in a longer-throated case.

Elk – no. All loads drop below the 1,500 ft-lbs elk threshold between 125 and 175 yards. The 257 Roberts is a deer and antelope cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between standard and +P 257 Roberts? Standard 257 Roberts chambers are loaded to approximately 49,000 CUP (copper units of pressure). The +P designation indicates a chamber designed for higher-pressure loads, typically producing an additional 100-150 FPS with the same bullet weights – pushing a 100-grain bullet from 2,900 FPS to approximately 3,000-3,050 FPS. Not all 257 Roberts rifles accept +P loads; verify your rifle’s chamber specification before using +P data. The difference in practical hunting performance is modest but meaningful for handloaders who want to maximize the cartridge.

How does the 257 Roberts compare to the 25-06 Remington? The 25-06 Remington pushes a 100-grain bullet to 3,230 FPS versus the 257 Roberts standard at 2,900 FPS – a 330 FPS advantage. At 300 yards the 25-06 drops 12.9 inches from a 100-yard zero versus 13.9 for the 257 Roberts; at 400 yards the gap grows to about 6 inches. Energy at 400 yards: 25-06 delivers approximately 1,184 ft-lbs versus the 257 Roberts’s 922 ft-lbs. The 25-06 is the superior long-range option. The 257 Roberts’s advantage is lighter recoil and a case that is genuinely efficient – it delivers its velocity with less powder and is more pleasant to shoot. For timber hunters inside 250 yards, the 257 Roberts is adequate and more enjoyable to shoot. For open-country hunters at 300-400 yards, the 25-06 is the better choice. See 25-06 Remington vs 257 Roberts for full analysis.

Is the 257 Roberts still worth loading in 2026? Yes, for hunters who own rifles chambered in it and appreciate the cartridge’s character. Factory ammunition is available from Remington and Federal in limited variety, and handloading opens the full range of 25-caliber bullet options. The 257 Roberts will not outperform the 25-06 at any distance, but for deer and antelope inside 300 yards it is fully adequate, and its mild recoil and efficient case make it genuinely pleasant to shoot. Hunters who value heritage, light recoil, and a well-designed cartridge that predates most modern alternatives have legitimate reasons to stay with it.

What rifles are chambered in 257 Roberts? The Ruger Model 77 was chambered in 257 Roberts through multiple production runs and is the most commonly encountered modern rifle in this caliber in used rifle sales. Winchester offered the Model 70 in 257 Roberts historically. Remington produced the Model 700 in this chambering. Custom rifles built on pre-war Mauser 98 actions are also common given the 257 Roberts’s ancestry from the 7×57 Mauser case. Current production new rifles in 257 Roberts are rare; most buyers encounter this chambering in used or vintage firearms.

What bullet weight shoots best in the 257 Roberts? In most 257 Roberts rifles with the standard 1:10 twist, the 100-117 grain hunting bullets produce the best accuracy. The 1:10 twist stabilizes bullets in this weight range optimally – heavier bullets at the upper limit work, and the lighter 75-87 grain varmint bullets are adequately stabilized. Most dedicated 257 Roberts hunters and handloaders settle on the 100 or 117-grain class as the accuracy sweet spot that also maximizes the cartridge’s hunting capability.

Can the 257 Roberts handle wild boar? Yes, inside 200 yards with the 100-grain Partition or 117-grain GameKing. Boar require deeper penetration than deer due to the shoulder shield, and the Partition’s guaranteed rear-core penetration provides the margin needed on quartering shots. The 257 Roberts’s moderate energy (922-990 ft-lbs at 400 yards) is adequate for hogs inside 200 yards but does not provide the margin that heavier calibers do. Use the Partition exclusively for boar and keep shots to broadside or clear quartering-away angles.

Editorial note: This article was originally published in October 2025 and revised in April 2026. The revision corrected the zero to 100 yards per site standard for standard hunting cartridges, recalculated all ballistic tables for 100-yard zero with accurate load-specific velocity data, corrected the energy table (the original showed some 90 gr and 100 gr values as identical at multiple distances which is physically incorrect given different velocities and BCs), added velocity retention table with transonic analysis, added the standard vs +P chamber distinction as a critical practical note, corrected the practical range recommendation from the original’s “500-700 yards for big game” to the accurate 300 yards maximum, replaced the Hornady ELD-X profile with Nosler Ballistic Tip 100 gr as more practical for this cartridge, and added FAQ section.
