That positioning is still accurate twenty years later. The Fusion remains the most affordable bonded hunting bullet available as a component. Every other bonded design – Nosler AccuBond, Hornady InterBond, Federal Trophy Bonded, Nosler Partition – costs meaningfully more per unit. The Fusion costs roughly what a Sierra GameKing or Remington Core-Lokt costs, while delivering the core-retention characteristics that previously required a significant price premium.
The tradeoff is that the Fusion is not the most aerodynamically optimized bullet in its category. BCs range from 0.276 to 0.520 – adequate for most hunting ranges, but trailing the Hornady InterBond (0.400-0.550) and Federal Trophy Bonded (0.430-0.520) at comparable weights. The cannelure is present on most Fusion variants. It marks the intended seating depth, allows crimp application where needed, and contributes to consistent bullet positioning in the case during magazine handling. In semi-automatic rifles or heavy-recoiling magnums where bullet setback is a concern, the cannelure makes a proper crimp straightforward to apply.
One construction note that matters for reloaders: the Fusion’s bonded construction and skived jacket mean the bearing surface behaves somewhat differently from a conventional soft-point under sizing die pressure. Ballistics and Performance
G1 BCs from 0.276 to 0.520 span a wider range than they might initially suggest, because the lineup mixes short, heavy calibers with longer, lighter designs. The 90-grain .224-inch at BC 0.424 is the most aerodynamically interesting entry in the table – a genuinely high BC for a .224-inch bullet, made possible by the relatively heavy-for-caliber weight of 90 grains. The 90-grain Fusion in .224-inch is explicitly not a varmint bullet. The 165-grain .308-inch at BC 0.449 and SD 0.248 is the lineup’s volume seller. That is adequate for deer at that distance with good shot placement. The bonded core at 95% weight retention means this bullet hits the vitals with essentially all its mass intact, rather than the partial mushroom and core remnant that a conventional soft-point might deliver after passing through a shoulder blade.
The 200-grain .308-inch at BC 0.520 and SD 0.301 is a specialized option for hunters pursuing very large game with 300 Winchester Magnum or 300 WSM. SD 0.301 is among the highest available in the .308-inch caliber and ensures deep penetration through the heaviest muscle and bone on elk, moose, and large bear. Comparison Bullets
