The 223 Remington was standardized by Remington in 1964 as the civilian counterpart to the military 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. It is the most widely used centerfire rifle cartridge in North America by volume, chambered in more AR-15 and bolt-action rifles than any other round. Its combination of low recoil, flat trajectory, broad component availability, and genuine accuracy at moderate ranges has made it the default choice for coyote hunters, prairie dog shooters, and AR-15 owners across the country.

Chamber compatibility note: The 223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO are similar but not identical. A 5.56x45mm chamber has a longer throat (freebore) than a 223 Remington chamber. Military 5.56 ammunition can be fired safely in a 5.56 chamber or a .223 Wylde chamber; it should not be fired in a standard 223 Remington chamber due to higher pressure from the longer bullet seating against a shorter throat. 223 Remington ammunition is safe in any of the three chambers. If your rifle’s chamber is uncertain, use 223 Remington commercial ammunition.

The 223 Remington is a varmint and predator cartridge that doubles as a coyote hunting round and an AR-15 competition cartridge. It is not a big game cartridge. The original article on this page claimed the Barnes TTSX is “correct for elk or larger game” and that AccuBond produces “ethical harvests up to 700 yards for big game” from the 223 Remington. This is incorrect – the 223 Remington produces a maximum of 1,313-1,834 ft-lbs at the muzzle depending on load, well below the minimum required for elk at any distance.

For the lighter varmint loads, practical accuracy ceiling is 700-750 yards.

At altitude (5,000+ feet), supersonic range extends by 50-75 yards for all loads due to reduced air density – relevant for western mountain varmint shooting.

The energy table makes the 223 Remington’s honest limits clear. The 55 and 62-grain loads cross below 1,000 ft-lbs at approximately 115-135 yards. The 69-grain SMK crosses below 1,000 ft-lbs around 165 yards. The 77-grain SMK holds above 1,000 ft-lbs to approximately 140 yards.

For deer (1,000 ft-lbs practical minimum), the 223 Remington is below the threshold before 200 yards with all loads. It is legal for deer hunting in many states but energetically inadequate for reliable ethical kills past 100-125 yards. For elk, the cartridge never reaches the 1,500 ft-lbs threshold – the best load (69-grain SMK) produces only 1,335 ft-lbs at the muzzle.


Terminal Performance Profiles

Hornady V-MAX 55 gr

Construction: Polymer tip with thin expanding jacket, lead core. The most common 223 Remington varmint load in factory ammunition.

Terminal behavior: Fragments violently at 223 Remington velocities. At 3,240 FPS the V-MAX produces explosive fragmentation with penetration of 6-10 inches and a large temporary cavity. On prairie dogs and ground squirrels this is immediately effective. On coyotes from broadside shots, the V-MAX produces reliable kills at distances where impact velocity exceeds 2,200 FPS (approximately 425 yards).

Hunting application: Varmints to 500 yards, coyotes to 400 yards. The 55-grain V-MAX is the standard reference varmint load for the 223 Remington – widely available, accurate in most barrels, and produces the explosive effect varmint hunters seek. Not appropriate for deer – energy is below 1,000 ft-lbs before 150 yards and penetration depth is insufficient for reliable access to deer vitals.

62 gr FMJ (M855 / Green Tip)

Construction: Full metal jacket steel-core penetrator. The military M855 load. Not an expanding bullet – designed for penetration through barriers, not controlled expansion on game.

Terminal behavior: The M855 does not expand reliably in soft tissue at hunting velocities. At close range where the bullet is still tumbling from barrel rifling, it can yaw and cause significant tissue disruption. At extended range where the bullet has stabilized, it often passes through soft tissue with a narrow wound channel. Performance is inconsistent and not appropriate for hunting application.

Application: Target practice and volume shooting. The M855/62-grain FMJ is the most cost-effective 223 Remington load for high-volume AR-15 training and practice. It is not a hunting load. In some jurisdictions, FMJ ammunition is prohibited for deer hunting even where the 223 Remington caliber is legal – check local regulations.

Sierra MatchKing 69 gr

Construction: Open-tip match (OTM) bullet with thin precision-formed jacket. Designed for accuracy, not controlled terminal expansion.

Terminal behavior: At 223 Remington velocities, the 69-grain SMK can produce yaw and tumble in soft tissue at close range, causing significant disruption. Twist rate requirement: The 77-grain SMK requires a minimum 1:8 twist for reliable stabilization. Rifles with 1:9 twist may or may not stabilize it depending on barrel temperature and atmospheric conditions; 1:12 twist will not stabilize it.
