The 22 ARC (22 Advanced Rifle Cartridge) was introduced by Hornady in 2024, formed by necking down the 6mm ARC case to accept .224-inch bullets. The design goal was to give the AR-15 platform access to high-BC 22-caliber bullets – specifically the 80-90 grain class that the 223 Remington’s standard twist rates and moderate case capacity cannot effectively propel. By using the 6mm ARC’s short-fat case geometry and specifying a fast 1:7.5 twist barrel, the 22 ARC pushes 88-grain ELD-M bullets to approximately 3,000 FPS with ballistic coefficients substantially higher than any practical 223 Remington or 22-250 Remington load.

The 22 ARC’s velocity advantage over the 223 Remington extends reliable varmint performance approximately 50-75 yards farther in equivalent wind conditions. In a 10 MPH crosswind, the 88-grain ELD-M drifts about 3-4 inches less than a 223 Remington 77-grain at 500 yards – enough to keep it inside a ground squirrel vital zone where the 223 Remington begins to challenge.

Coyotes – ELD-VT or ELD-M inside 400 yards with broadside body shots. Energy at 400 yards (770-962 ft-lbs) is adequate for coyotes. A self-imposed 350-yard limit in variable wind provides margin. The 22 ARC is a better coyote cartridge than the 223 Remington at 300-400 yards due to its higher-BC bullets producing more reliable trajectory and wind resistance in field conditions.

Deer – not recommended beyond 275-300 yards. Energy drops below 1,000 ft-lbs between 300 and 350 yards with all loads. Inside 275 yards with quality expanding bullets (ELD-X equivalent in .224 caliber) on broadside shots, the 22 ARC is legally adequate for deer in most states. The 6mm ARC parent cartridge is the better deer choice with substantially more energy at equivalent distances.

AR-15 platform note – the 22 ARC requires a 1:7 or 1:7.5 twist barrel for reliable stabilization of 85-90 grain bullets.
